Under the general direction of the Nurse Manager the Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) practices within the Lahey Clinic Professional Practice Model, MA State nurse Practice Act and ANA Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics. The ANM Supervises and coordinates the delivery of patient care on assigned unit. Assumes full management responsibility in the absence of the Nurse Manager, which includes communicating policies, effectively recommending salary actions, evaluating staff job performance and counseling staff. Areas of responsibility include: Clinical practice, System coordination, Quality improvement, Human resource management, Unit budget, Professional growth, Self-improvement. The Assistant Nurse Manager may provide direct or indirect care to patients and in collaboration with other health care team members. The ANM maintains a current level of knowledge with leadership skills as defined by nursing specialty organizations, complies with all regulations and standards of regulatory and accrediting bodies, and is currently licensed in the state of Massachusetts as a registered nurse. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: including but not limited to: Clinical Practice: Develops, implements, and assures compliance with Nursing Practice Guidelines; Encourages staff participation on Shared Governance Councils, nursing committees, and organization committees; Maintains and displays knowledge of current professional/clinical issues and uses evidence based resources to implement necessary changes in the delivery of nursing care; Collaborates with leadership team to provide opportunities for staff development such as participation in nursing research, certification in nursing field, participation in professional organizations; Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide expected standards of care when providing direct patient care; Determines staff assignments based on patient acuity and staff skill mix. System Coordination: Links departmental goals to organization’s mission and goals; Works collaboratively to solve problems, improve processes, and integrate services within the department and with other departments; Supports new ideas and changes within the department by actively participating and contributing; Demonstrates flexibility in meeting demands of the department; Organizes and prioritizes work to meet deadlines; Develops effective communication methods to keep staff and others informed about activities of the organization and department; Facilitates patient flow utilizing necessary computer applications in conjunction with the Nursing Supervisor. Quality Improvement: Monitors compliance to regulatory criteria and standards of care; Reviews outcome measures and works collaboratively with staff and leadership team to improve patient outcomes; Collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams to comply with regulatory standards, improve patient satisfaction and outcomes, and systematically improve important processes and activities. Human Resource Management: Works collaboratively with the Nurse Manager to recruit, hire and retain qualified personnel; Participates in the performance appraisal process as assigned; Assures appropriate orientation, competence assessment, in-service training and continuing education for all staff; Fosters staff development by assisting them to identify goals and appropriate opportunities for learning; Encourages creativity and celebrates staff accomplishments; Promotes an environment sensitive to diverse needs of patients and employees; Coaches and supports staff by removing barriers and addressing issues; Actively participates in staff meetings; Communicates staffing concerns to Nurse Manager and/or Associate Chief; Delegates work appropriately and provides direction and guidance to nursing and support staff; Coordinates scheduling and staffing of the unit. Budgetary Responsibilities: Develops and implements cost effective staffing patterns; Uses resources effectively to provide high quality cost effective services; Promotes staff awareness of hospital cost and assists Nurse Manager with maintenance of unit budget; Maintains ANSOS daily to ensure accurate staffing patterns for payroll purposes; Manages expenses and identifies areas of potential cost savings. Professional Growth/Self Improvement: Pursues self-awareness, actively seeks feedback, accepts constructive criticism, and modifies behavior accordingly; Engages in professional development activities such as education, participating in professional associations, or other appropriate activities; Maintains necessary continuing education requirements for license, certifications and enhancements; Maintains own educational record; Supports Lahey Clinics commitment to community based activities. Organizational Requirements: Incorporates Lahey Clinic Guiding Principles, Mission Statement and Goals into daily activities; Complies with all Lahey Clinic Policies; Complies with behavioral expectations of the department and Lahey Clinic; Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients; Demonstrates understanding of job description, performance expectations, and competency assessment; Demonstrates commitment toward meeting and exceeding customer needs and adheres to Customer Service standards; Participates in departmental and/or interdepartmental quality improvement activities; Participates in and successfully completes Mandatory Education; Performs all other duties as needed or directed to meet department needs. Minimum Qualifications: Education: BSN required, Masters preferred; Minimum 3 years of experience required. Licensure, Certification, Registration: Current licensure to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts; Life Support Certification: BLS. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Demonstrates necessary clinical competence in area of nursing practice; Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; Basic computer skills. Experience: Minimum of three years acute care nursing experience. Beth Israel Lahey Health requires all staff be vaccinated against influenza and COVID-19 as a condition of employment.
